Online Dating – Meet the Millennial Couples Who Met Online

As social media infiltrates every aspect of our lives, it’s not surprising that apparently 1 in 5 people now meet their partners online.  In my opinion, online dating is an amazing way to meet someone.  Meeting ‘the one’ is difficult enough, but add in the pressures and time constraints in our daily life – it becomes really hard!

I don’t particularly enjoy going out clubbing anymore, and I was finding it impossible to meet anyone.  So in December 2013 I signed up to a few dating sites, and met my lovely partner in January 2014.  I’ve since been totally amazed by how many couples have met online, and not only in my age group – I know couples my parents age who met online.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog on how I met Mark on Tinder.  It sparked some interest, so I decided to reach out and see if other couples had met the same way.  I received a great response and I’m so excited to share their stories!

Jake and Danielle; Facebook

Name & Age:  Jake 28 and Danielle 26

Where online did you meet?  Facebook

When did you first make contact?  May 2011

How long have you been together?  Almost 6 years

What were your opening lines to one another?  I’m not 100% sure.  However, I know he had put up a status asking for new people to talk to, and I commented asking what exactly ‘new people’ meant.  He then messaged me and we have spoken every single day since.

Where did you go on your first date?  We’ve never really ‘dated’ as originally it started out as just being friends.  So we’d hang out during the early months, at arcades, the cinema, went for drives in the countryside and camped once.

As a couple, do you have any milestones coming up?  September 4th is our 6th anniversary.  In October we will have been living together for 6 years (yep, we moved in within a couple months of seeing each other!)  I think that’s pretty much it… minus our dogs birthday which is in August and he’ll be 5 🙂

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of trying online dating?  I suppose because mine was pretty accidental and I am personally not into online dating, I’d say the quote, ‘good things come to those who wait’.  Who and what you need comes into your life at just the right time, so don’t worry or obsess too much over going out and searching for it.  Everything does happen for a reason and just at the right time, more than my relationship has proved that to me in life.

Name & Age:  Ben 32 and Amy 28

Where online did you meet?  Plenty of Fish

When did you first make contact?  March 2015

How long have you been together?  2 years

What were your opening lines to one another?  I (Ben) said I had huge respect for Amy being a nurse after what I’d been through.

Where did you go on your first date?  My (Bens) back garden.  Fire pit, sofa, some of her favourite foods and candles.

As a couple, do you have any milestones coming up?  We’re due a baby on 20th July!

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of trying online dating?  Ignore the perverts/bunny boilers.  If you like the look of someone, ignore the fact they may have started with the dreaded, “hey, how’s you?”.  Your answer could be the conversation starter they need to sweep you off your feet.

Katie and Bradley; Tinder

Name & Age:  Katie and Bradley

Where online did you meet?  Tinder

When did you first make contact?  22.08.16

How long have you been together?  Just over 10 months

What were your opening lines to one another?  Katie said, “Tinder doesn’t work while you’re moving on a train, so here’s my number”.

Where did you go on your first date?  Bradley came to my home town and we went to a breakfast cafe for brunch.  We walked up to a mechanical museum and sat in a pub for a while.  A week later, he took me for a couple of drinks and asked me next to the canal to be his girlfriend and if we could make it “Facebook official” two minutes into our relationship.

As a couple, do you have any milestones coming up?  Our 1 year anniversary this August.

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of trying online dating?  Keep trying even if you think it’s not working for you.  I was tempted to delete Tinder a few hours before matching with Bradley.  There are a large percentage on Tinder who are ‘players’ and do just want sex.  But, if you hold out, you’ll find someone amazing.  Without Tinder I would never have found Bradley, and I’m so thankful for it.

Lauren and Iain; Twitter

Name & Age:  Lauren 32 and Iain 29

Where online did you meet?  Twitter

When did you first make contact?  We were friends on Twitter and Facebook in 2010/11 when I first starting writing for an online games website.  It was just friendship, I did like Iain, but was already in a relationship.  I then found out a friend of mine started seeing Iain, which of course upset me and ended my friendship with him and my then friend.  I became single and Iain became single shortly after me.  We then became friends again, agreed to meet up at Eurogamer Expo in London 2012 and the rest is history.

How long have you been together?  Since September 2012

What were your opening lines to one another?  I said, “hello!  Nice to finally meet you!”.  I was dressed as a zombie to promote the latest Resident Evil game.  So that was an interesting first contact!

Where did you go on your first date?  We met up in London for a long weekend.  Spent our Saturday at the National History Museum and Science Museum and enjoyed a chinese buffet.

As a couple, do you have any milestones coming up?  We just celebrated our first wedding anniversary!

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of trying online dating?  It’s not always smooth sailing.  I had some bad experiences from online dating, but also some good.  If you do decide to go on a date with someone online, let a family member or friend know.  Or make it a double date!  Don’t rush into the date either, try and get to know the person more online.  Sadly some people do lie, but not all people are bad!  My mother-in-law met my father-in-law and they have been together for 6 years and married for 3!

How long have you been together?  5 years

What were your opening lines to one another?  His first ever message was ‘helloooo XD’.  I’m pretty sure I just replied with ’hey’.

Where did you go on your first date?  We had our first date/the first time we ever met at Starbucks (I know typical) but I didn’t really know who he was so I wanted something public.

As a couple, do you have any milestones coming up?  Yes!!  We are moving into our first home together in September, and I’m so excited!  Mainly to decorate but also to be alone.

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of trying online dating?  Do it!  Just be careful, make sure you see photos and all that so you know they are legit, don’t get catfished!!  It changed my life and I managed to find the perfect person.

  • Thanks for including Jake and I! I really enjoyed reading the other stories too. It’s crazy how online dating works isn’t it? Very nice to see the serious side of it though, not just those looking for the wrong things. 😛
Looking forward to the 2nd part.

  • My boyfriend and I met on Tinder a bit over a year ago! It was meant to be just a fling as I was moving to London a few months later (we’re Australian). Instead we went long distance for 6 months before he moved over to be with me… Not quite what I was expecting when I drunkenly swiped on him one night hahah

  • This is adorable. I have a friend who met her husband through Twitter and they are perfect for one another. I have also had Twitter friendships become real life friendships!

  • This is a great post. So many of us automatically shut down with the mention of online dating. But when u think of it, it’s probably safer than meeting a stranger at bar a when u have already (overly) suppressed your inhibitions a bit…. At least you have time to think things through….

  • Love this 🙂 My bf and I met online. He would feel so embarrassed to say it to people when we would go places, and I always thought it was so strange. Sure, it might be looked down on by *some* people, but it’s 2017 for goodness sakes! You can do everything on the Internet…
